SUMMARY OF OP-EDS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS

Two papers discuss the Iranian nuclear issue ahead of a widely-anticipated IAEA report:

Yediot Ahronot believes that, "The IAEA report is the last opportunity to do what the US, Germany, France and Great Britain have failed to do up until now – create a unified international front that will embargo Iran and cause its leaders to understand that continuing the nuclear project will lead to economic sanctions, a worsening of the economic crisis and the undermining of the stability of their regime."  The author contends that, "While the Russians do not want Iran to have nuclear weapons, the issue does not top their list of priorities.  If the US can bring them onboard, China will find it difficult to stand completely alone as the friend of leprous Tehran," and concludes that, "Only global unity is likely to cause the leaders of the Iranian regime to think twice about the whole matter.  Only such a move will prevent an Israeli attack."

Ma'ariv asserts that, "In a certain sense, the entire diplomatic and media storm ahead of the report stems from the desire to persuade two men alone – Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao.  A clever but clear enough message has been passed on to these two men: There are two possibilities – either impose paralyzing sanctions on Iran or Israel and/or the US will feel that they must act militarily.  True, if sanctions are imposed, the energy sector will be hit.  But if a military attack is carried out, the damage is liable to be much greater and more far-reaching."  However, the author fears that, "The Russians, the Chinese and the Iranians are likely to discover that this message is a bluff," because, "In any case, there is no chance of a military attack."
__________

Yisrael Hayom comments on the recent 18th anniversary of the signing of the Oslo accords and asserts that, "Information in our hands today, and which was also in our hands 18 years ago, teaches that there is no chance that these agreements – in their current format – will succeed," partly because they were signed with only one Palestinian faction that speaks for neither the entire Palestinian people nor the wider Arab-Muslim world.  The author avers that, "The Arabs will make peace with Israel only if they reach the conclusion that it is possible to destroy it.  Israel will never be able to make peace from a position of weakness.  In the Oslo accords, Israel gave the Arabs in general and the Palestinians in particular the great hope that this time, in the name of 'peace', they would be able to bring about the elimination of the Jewish state."
